Some Geography and Sociology
The parish is set in the English Midlands within the area of the Black Country, an area known for 'metal bashing' and part of the cradle of modern industry. The area was served by heavily used canals and two major railways. These arteries moved coal, iron ore, and limestone as well as finished goods in and out of the area. Throughout the town and parish, shallow mines are still to be found and, as recently as in the last 20 years, a shaft was discovered in the old Rectory garden.
In 1980, the parish of St John's, Wednesbury, was amalgamated with St James, adding new opportunities and additional church members. This facilitated the meeting of objectives, particularly in the field of ministry. With the contraction of steel making, metal bashing, and foundry work, this part of the Black Country has suffered from major unemployment and some economic stagnation. It is hoped that future government developments will assist in bringing life back to the area.
